Accessibility

The Riverhead Free Library is completely ADA compliant. The main entrance has automatic doors (first installed after the 1981 expansion). There are ADA compliant restrooms on the main level and meeting room level. An elevator provides access to all levels of the library. Our staff is always willing to help retrieve items that may be shelved beyond a patron’s reach.

The Yellow Barn is accessible via a ramp. The Friends of the Library are always willing to help if you need assistance inside the Barn.

The library has sound hearing amplification devices available for use by patrons with hearing impairments.

These devices enable patrons to better hear movies and lectures. They are located at the Circulation Desk.

Each area where there are public access computers has large print computer keyboards. These keyboards can make computer use easier for our low-vision patrons or for patrons with fine motor skills impairments. Staff members are able to swap out the standard keyboards for these adaptive keyboards.

For patrons who are visually impaired, the library has a print magnifier, which can be used to read printed materials in the library. Patrons can also bring items from home, such as mail, crossword puzzles and/or photographs. Visit the Reference Desk for information.

Large print books are available at the Library. Titles include a wide choice of best-sellers, fiction and nonfiction.

Suffolk County residents who have difficulty reading or listening to regular print and audiovisual materials are eligible for free talking books and Braille books through the New York Public Library’s Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library.
